Poop Emoji Stressball Pattern

January 11, 2018

A while back I made one of my girlfriend's, who was going through a tough time with stress and anxiety, a unicorn stressball. My kid's had experimented with making "Oobleck" and informed me it would make a great consistency for the guts of a stressball. So I whipped up a tiny chubby unicorn, shoved in a balloon full of squishy goodness and voila! I wasn't entirely happy with the amount of sewing and weaving in of hair for the mane and tail, so I decided to hold off on publishing the pattern until I could figure out a good work around.

A few years ago when I was still doing custom orders, I had posted a Poop Emoji pillow I freehanded, and it recently started getting multiple comments on the picture requesting the pattern. My pattern "to-do" list was already a mile long, so I marked it down on a post-it as one of my "squeeze in" patterns. My daughter had seen this note, and suggested I make a mini version as a stressball like I did with the unicorn(I'd like to take credit for her creative genius, but that's all her ;)).

Here is the super quick, easy pattern for Poop Emoji Stressball!

POOP EMOJI STRESSBALL CROCHET PATTERN

Materials:
*Scissors
*Funnel (you can make your own out of a pop bottle neck, just rinse and dry the bottle out, and cut in half)
*4-6 tablespoons of Corn Starch & Water
*Balloon (avoid using water balloons as they are thinner and easier to break)
*Plastic knife
*White Felt
*Glue gun
*Stuffing
*Darning Needle
*Brown Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Knit Picks Brava WW "Sienna") ~70 yards
*4.0mm crochet hook (or one that makes gauge)

Gauge:
First 7 rounds (36 sts)= 3 inch diameter
(Note: The Brava WW yarn I use is extremely fine. If you are using a thicker WW such as Red Heart Super Saver or you have a looser tension, you will probably have to go down a few hook sizes. Caron Simply Soft is a finer WW that you can use that is equivalent to Brava WW!)

Abbreviations:

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

ch - chain

sc2tog/hdc2tog – single/half double crochet two together/invisible decrease

slst – slip stitch

Rnd – round

st(s) - stitch(es)

FLO - Front Loop Only
BLO - Back Loop Only

Notes About Pattern:
*Depending on how "full" you made the balloon, you may have to adjust your gauge accordingly. The base (first 7 rounds) should have the bottom of the balloon sit perfectly in the center and touch the edges of the base.
*Total number of stitches in round will be listed at the end of the round instructions in brackets.
*You can use Magic Circle in place of “Ch2, Xsc in 2nd ch from hook”.

How to Make the Stressball "Guts":
Note: This part can get a little messy, so I suggest doing this over a sink in the kitchen!

Step 1:

Stretch out the balloon to help give it a bit of stretch. Insert funnel into balloon (or wrap opening of balloon around the neck of a pop bottle). Pour 2-3 tablespoons of water into the balloon to give it some weight.

Step 2:
Add in a teaspoon of corn starch at a time. Use the plastic knife to push it through the pop bottle neck into the balloon.

Step 3:
"Massage" or work the corn starch down the neck of the balloon and into the water. It will get jammed up, so gently use the knife to push it down into the base of the balloon.

Step 4:
Continue to add corn starch and water until desired fullness. Your balloon doesn't need to be round and full! Just enough that it fits nicely into the palm of your hand!

Step 5:
Continue to knead base of balloon to thorough mix corn starch and water. It should have the consistency of thick pudding.

Step 6:
Tie off end of balloon with a TIGHT knot. You can cut the neck of a second balloon off and slip it over top of the filled balloon for extra support if preferred, however I find this makes the stressball less "squishy" so I stick with just the one!

And.... Voila! You have the "guts" of your stressball! Now for the crochet part!

Creating the Face:
Cute out two 1 inch ovals and 1 small triangle for the eyes and mouth. Using a black pen or fine tip marker, colour in a smaller oval for the pupils on each eye. Take the glue gun and glue eyes on front between Rnds 16-20 approximately 3 sts apart. Glue mouth 2 rounds below the bottom of the eyes.

Your adorably, weird Poop Emoji Stressball is now complete!!
